36 Governors Move to Cut Transportation and Food Costs

Abuja, August 27, 2026 — The 36 state governors under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) have resolved to expand the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles as a key strategy to reduce transportation costs and ease the rising prices of food and other goods across the country. The decision was reached on Wednesday night during the third meeting of the NGF held at the Forum’s Secretariat in Abuja. In a communiqué signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the governors pledged to explore financing options and deepen collaboration with private investors to accelerate vehicle conversions to CNG and expand the necessary infrastructure nationwide. The resolution followed a presentation on the proposed National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP), a state-driven initiative designed to pass on the lower operating costs of CNG to commuters through reduced transport fares. The programme envisages state support for vehicle conversions, CNG-powered fleets, and enabling infrastructure, alongside fare commitments from participating operators, with an indicative target of lowering passenger fares. Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, who briefed journalists after the meeting, emphasized that transportation costs have a direct impact on the prices of food and essential commodities. “Transportation is key,” he noted, explaining that high costs of moving goods from one location to another are ultimately reflected in market prices paid by citizens. With CNG cheaper than petrol, wider adoption is expected to help ease economic hardship following the removal of the fuel subsidy. The governors also rejected allegations that states had failed to properly account for proceeds from fuel subsidy removal. Further details on financing and implementation of the NACTP will be worked out in the coming weeks as states partner with the private sector to roll out the initiative.
