Tinubu Hails Governors’ Move to Cut Transport Costs with CNG

Abuja, August 27, 2026 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed satisfaction with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum’s decision to take immediate steps aimed at reducing transportation costs across the states, with a strong emphasis on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. In a statement shared on his official Instagram page on Thursday, the President noted that the governors resolved on their own initiative to leverage the cost benefits of CNG to bring down transport fares for citizens. “I am pleased with my discussion with the Governors’ Forum this afternoon,” President Tinubu said. “The Governors have, on their own initiative, resolved to take immediate measures to bring down the cost of transportation in their states, with a strong focus on leveraging the cost benefits of CNG and electric vehicles.” He highlighted the Federal Government’s ongoing investments in the energy transition. Through the Presidential CNG Initiative, over 120,000 vehicles have already been converted nationwide, with more than 100,000 additional conversion kits in the pipeline. The government is also expanding conversion centres and refuelling infrastructure across the country. The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund is currently financing more than 100 gas projects, including 15 CNG mother stations and 86 daughter stations. In May, the President commissioned four of these projects in Lagos, Abuja, and Owerri. President Tinubu further disclosed that he has directed the rollout of an additional 500 CNG refuelling stations, bringing the total planned stations to 1,000 nationwide. A joint Federal and State committee will be established to implement the measures immediately. The President noted that a vehicle running on CNG spends 60 to 80 per cent less on fuel compared to petrol, and the target is for Nigerians to begin enjoying lower transport fares from October 1. “We have agreed that cheaper fuel should result in cheaper fares!” he stated. “Each tier of government must keep doing its part and work together for the benefit of every Nigerian. Nigeria First.” The development follows the recent resolution by the 36 state governors to explore financing and expand the use of CNG-powered vehicles as part of efforts to ease the cost of living.
