Urgent Intervention Begins on Benin-Sapele-Warri and Benin-Agbor Roads

Benin City, Edo State — August 2026 The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Federal Ministry of Works, Edo State Government and other stakeholders have commenced an urgent intervention to fix failed sections of the critical Benin-Sapele-Warri and Benin-Agbor roads. The move follows growing hardship faced by commuters, residents and businesses due to the deteriorating condition of the highways, which have caused gridlock and disrupted economic activities. During a joint inspection, Minister of Works David Umahi stated that the intervention was directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deliver immediate and sustainable solutions along the vital corridors. NDDC Managing Director Samuel Ogbuku disclosed that the Commission has scoped a 15.4-kilometre stretch between Benin, Ologbo Junction and Sapele. He described the route as strategic to the region’s economy and confirmed that the NDDC and the Ministry of Works would collaborate to ensure remedial works conform to the original road design for lasting results. Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo welcomed the development, emphasising that Edo’s position as a major gateway connecting several regions makes the state of these highways a national concern. Stakeholders are expected to move swiftly from inspection to effective rehabilitation to ease the severe strain on motorists and restore smooth movement along the corridors.
