YourCity News Supports IGP’s Directive: Jungle Justice Is Murder – Rule of Law Must Prevail

We fully endorse the clear and firm directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunde Disu (Olatunji Disu), declaring that any person who assaults or summarily executes a suspected criminal under the guise of “mob action” or “jungle justice” is guilty of murder. The IGP has rightly stated that such acts will be treated as homicide nationwide. Commissioners of Police across the 36 states and the FCT have been directed to investigate every case of mob violence thoroughly using forensic and intelligence tools, and to prosecute not only those who carry out the killings but also those who mobilise crowds, film and circulate the acts, or obstruct police intervention. Under Nigerian law, murder attracts the death penalty, while conspiracy to commit murder carries up to 14 years’ imprisonment. As a responsible news organisation, we stand with the Nigeria Police Force on this matter. No individual, group, or community has the right to act as investigator, judge, and executioner. Allegations, rumours, or even genuine suspicion of crime do not justify taking a human life. Only a competent court of law can determine guilt and impose lawful punishment. We urge members of the public to: • Immediately report suspected criminals to the police or other security agencies. • Refuse to participate in, encourage, or film mob violence. • Allow the justice system to function, however imperfect it may currently be. Jungle justice has claimed innocent lives in the past and undermines the very foundation of a civilised society. Supporting the rule of law is not optional — it is essential for the safety and future of all Nigerians.
